Christopher Platt

Dal 2007 è il Responsabile dello sviluppo delle collezioni della New York Public Library (e delle sue 90 sedi, dal Bronx a Staten Island).

Christopher Platt has worked in libraries of many shapes and sizes for over 20 years.  He spent 6 of those years working with libraries across the U.S. on collection development projects from the Collection Management Dept at Baker & Taylor, Inc.  He then served 2 years as Coordinator of Collection Development for Queens Library, one of the most heavily used library systems in the U.S.

In 2007, he joined The New York Public Library, where he is now Acting Director of Collections and Circulation Operations, which coordinates the purchasing, cataloging, processing and distribution of materials and e-resources for 90 NYPL locations across The Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island.  This winter he is telling folks about 2 terrific books: Townie by Andre Dubus III, due out end of February and American Rose – A Nation Laid Bare: the Life and Times of Gypsy Rose Lee, by Karen Abbott, available among many other terrific offerings at ebooks.nypl.org.

AL DIGITAL BOOK WORLD del gennaio del 2011 ha partecipato a un panel : The Ebook Ecosystem: Where do Libraries Fit?

Libraries, publishers, and all parties in between are still feeling their way toward a happy ebook medium. As consumers drive ever increasing digital demand, readers now turn to their digital branches to get a feel for new authors and discover new titles. But when the library copy is just a click away from the retail version, can the traditional model of sales to libraries hold?

Other factors stand to influence the sale and distribution of ebooks to libraries as well. Consider that a library ebook potentially lasts forever: it won’t wear out, get stolen, or otherwise go missing (read: will never need replacement). Are there also new opportunities for promoting books through libraries? Are there new ways to increase author visibility, and make works more discoverable and available than ever before?

Bringing together the publisher and library perspectives, this panel will consider the major factors that must figure into a well-rounded ebook model—one that ultimately doesn’t cannibalize sales and also adequately serves the needs of public library users.
